All are welcome!
We welcome new members to our church community and family. If you are interested in joining our church, we invite you attend one of our new member orientations that are held throughout the year. In these sessions we talk about what it means to be a part of the Christian tradition and to be a United Methodist. We will introduce you to the variety of exciting ministries offered at Tempe First UMC and ways you might become involved and active. New members are officially welcomed into the congregation on Sunday mornings after the new member orientation so that our church family can meet and receive you into our fellowship.
While anyone is welcome to participate in our church even if they aren’t members, only members do have the right to vote in official church meetings. More importantly, becoming a member involves a commitment: United Methodists commit themselves to supporting their congregation’s ministry with their prayers, their presence, their gifts, and their service. This commitment can be an important step in one’s journey of faith.
We receive new members by:
- Profession of Faith: Those joining the church for the first time;
- Transfer of Membership: Those who are coming from another congregation or denomination and wish to become United Methodists at Tempe First; and
- Confirmation: For those who are in their teens we have a faith discovery class that runs several weeks, exploring our heritage, traditions and the meaning of the Christian faith. On the Sunday that these youth are concerned, they also become members of the church.
A word about Baptism…
An important place of entry into the life of the church is the sacrament of baptism. Here we celebrate the gift of God’s grace coming into our lives to grow and form our faith. We celebrate and share a covenant with God’s enduring and faithful love and the covenant of care with our Christian community.
We view baptism as a means of God’s grace and is available for infants and children as we recognize God’s love that claims and sustains the youngest members of our church family.
We also baptize teens and adults as part of their entry into the church. In preparing for baptism we invite you to meet with one of our pastors to prepare for this important step into the Christian life.
If you’re interested in joining the church, or if you have questions about what it means to join, please contact us. We’d be happy to talk with you.
